History, Design Philosophy & Brand Identity

The Edwardian structure at 10 Berners Street, W1T 3NP is one of those buildings that resists being turned into something generic — a heritage landmark with the kind of proportions and character that most developers would either over-restore or gut entirely. EDITION Hotels, working with Ian Schrager's exacting design sensibility, did neither. Fitzrovia has long been associated with creative and intellectual life, and the decision to plant a hotel of this calibre here, rather than in the more obvious territory of Mayfair or Knightsbridge, says something deliberate about the brand's identity.

Ian Schrager co-founded Studio 54 in New York in the late 1970s and later pioneered the boutique hotel category with properties like the Royalton and the Morgans in Manhattan. His concept for the EDITION brand is what he calls the new generation of luxury — an approach that prioritises atmosphere, authenticity, and considered design over conspicuous displays of wealth. In practice, that means no gold taps for the sake of gold taps. It means materials chosen for how they feel underfoot and overhead, not how they photograph in a brochure.

"Materials chosen for how they feel underfoot and overhead, not how they photograph in a brochure."

Throughout The London EDITION, the design language is consistently nautical — not in the kitsch sense of anchors and rope, but in the more refined sense of a well-appointed private yacht. Oak floors run underfoot. Wood-panelled walls create warmth without heaviness. Custom furnishings are built to last rather than to impress. Dutch photographer Hendrik Kerstens' large-format, gold-framed portraiture appears across the rooms, bringing a quiet humanity to the interiors.

The EDITION portfolio now spans properties from New York and Barcelona to Tokyo and Bodrum. The Marriott partnership provides the structural backbone — loyalty programmes, operational standards, global distribution — while Schrager's creative direction ensures the hotels don't feel designed by committee. The London EDITION stands as one of its most accomplished expressions.

Nautical Elegance Across 173 Individually Designed Spaces

Room Categories

Classic Rooms establish the design language clearly: oak floors, wood-panelled walls, a soft neutral colour palette, and the unmistakable warmth of the nautical aesthetic. These aren't large rooms by London standards, but they're well-proportioned and thoughtfully designed — nothing feels wasted.

Moving up through the categories, Deluxe Rooms and Superior Rooms offer additional space and, in some cases, more interesting views. Premier Rooms sit near the top of the standard room tier, and the four Premier Terrace Rooms — there are only four — offer private outdoor terraces that are rare in central London hotels at any price point.

Suites

One-Bedroom Suites, Loft Suites and the two Terrace Suites each offer generous living areas furnished with George Smith sofas — pieces that are immediately recognisable to anyone who knows British furniture. Oversized soaking tubs, large desks suitable for genuine work, and gold-framed Hendrik Kerstens photography complete the suite experience.

Suite guests also receive a complimentary gin trolley — a curated selection of gins and tonics, brought to your room, in a city that takes its gin seriously. It's the kind of gesture that makes a stay memorable without requiring a grand production. Views from the upper-floor suites extend across the London skyline.

The Penthouse

The Penthouse is the hotel's flagship suite and its most unambiguous expression of what the property can do at full stretch. The oversized private terrace offers rooftop views across central London, including the London Eye, and the interior spaces are proportioned and furnished at a level that makes most other hotel suites feel provisional by comparison.

If you're planning a significant occasion — an anniversary, a honeymoon, a once-in-a-while indulgence — this is the room.

Destinations in Their Own Right

Each venue draws a crowd entirely independent of whoever happens to be staying upstairs.

Berners Tavern

The flagship restaurant, helmed by Jason Atherton. A former ballroom crowned by hundreds of framed artworks and chandeliers inspired by New York's Grand Central Station. Contemporary seasonal British cuisine that is technically accomplished without being alienating.

edition-punch

The Punch Room

An intimate, speakeasy-style bar dedicated to the art of the punch. Its signature Milk Punch is a clarified, silky-smooth preparation. Low lighting, dark wood, and award-winning status since opening.

The Lobby Bar

The hotel's social hub. Open to guests and non-guests alike; a well-constructed cocktail list and the energy of a room that knows it's in the middle of things.

Private Dining Room

An exclusive, bookable space for intimate dinners, corporate entertaining and special celebrations, offering a self-contained environment with direct access to the Berners Tavern kitchen team — the same team, the same ingredient sourcing, the same standards.

The Social Table

A communal dining format that encourages guests to share the table with people they haven't met yet. An informal, social way to experience the hotel's food and drink culture, particularly well-suited to solo travellers or smaller groups who want to be part of the room's energy.

Fitzrovia at the Centre of Everything

Berners Street sits in Fitzrovia, a neighbourhood that occupies the territory between Oxford Street to the north, Soho to the south, and Marylebone to the west. It's an area that's always been slightly under the radar — which is precisely what makes it valuable. You're close to everything without being in the thick of it.

Fitzrovia itself rewards exploration on foot. Charlotte Street — running parallel to Berners Street — has been a restaurant destination for decades, with everything from Greek tavernas to Japanese izakayas. The Fitzroy Tavern on Charlotte Street has a literary history stretching back to the 1920s.

A five-minute walk south brings you into Soho — one of London's most reliably energetic neighbourhoods. World-class dining (Bao, Barrafina, and Andrew Edmunds are all within a short walk), LGBTQ+ venues with decades of history, jazz clubs, and Chinatown immediately to the south. For guests who want to be close to Soho's energy without being inside it at 2am, The London EDITION's location is essentially ideal.

Head west for ten minutes and you're in Mayfair — London's most consistently prestigious neighbourhood. Bond Street offers luxury retail at the highest level: Cartier, Chanel, Dior, and dozens of independent jewellers and art dealers. The Royal Academy of Arts on Piccadilly is one of London's great exhibition venues.

Covent Garden, ten to fifteen minutes east on foot, offers a different kind of London entirely. The Royal Opera House, the London Transport Museum, the covered market, and a concentrated stretch of boutique shopping in the Seven Dials area — a neighbourhood that works at any time of day.

Meetings, Events & Private Hire

The London EDITION's appeal to corporate and event clients is rooted in genuine character. The Private Dining Room is the most bookable of these spaces, offering a self-contained environment with direct access to the Berners Tavern kitchen team. Receptions can spill naturally into the hotel's public spaces — unlike purpose-built conference venues — and catering draws directly on the culinary expertise of the Berners Tavern operation.

As part of Marriott International, the property participates fully in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty programme — members earn points on every stay, access exclusive member rates, and at higher status tiers can expect complimentary upgrades when availability allows.
